  Go Green and Think Sustainability
ETRO China Releases First Sustainability Report

Shanghai, 14 September 2015 –METRO Cash & Carry China today held a launching ceremony of its first Sustainability Week, attended by China Chain stores & Franchise Association, World Wide Fund, Marine Stewardship Council, and the wholesaler’s suppliers and employees. During the event, the company also released its first METRO China Sustainability Report, and held the METRO One Hour campaign to turn off lights in office and stores to support energy saving.

"It is the duty of every one of us to take care of our homeland and protect the environment we live in.” said Mr. Jeroen de Groot, President of METRO China. “Sustainability is one of our guiding principles. We embrace sustainability in our daily business practices, including responsible sourcing, green operation, low-carbon supply chain, employees caring and contribution to community. We ensure that our business decisions take economic, ecological and social considerations, and believe at METRO we not only create value for shareholders and customers, but also make positive impact for the environment and society."

Embedding sustainability in METRO China’s business practices

As part of METRO’s commitment to achieving sustainable development worldwide, the wholesaler is focused on implementing environmental protection initiatives.

In terms of sourcing, METRO is a founding member of Business Social Standards Initiative (BSCI), which demands auditing of suppliers on its fulfillment of social responsibilities. These social standards include no child labor, no employee discrimination, and are related to working hours, compensation, working environment, as well as health and safety, etc. METRO has surveyed and collected data from all own brand non-food suppliers, and will cooperate only with suppliers in compliance with business social standards.

Meanwhile, METRO offers trainings to local farmers to help them reduce the use of chemical fertilizer and pesticide. In order to support sustainable fishing, the company encourages suppliers to clearly specify the fishing area on pre-packed seafood products. It also encourages own brand paper and wood product suppliers to achieve FSC certification, and actively extends the sourcing of organic foods for customers to pursue a sustainable lifestyle.

Since METRO China's first energy-saving and eco-friendly store, METRO Wuxi Huishan Store, opened in 2009, METRO China has not only introduced Energy-Saving Projects (ESP), including a plan valued RMB 120 million to upgrade all lightings into LED in all stores by 2020, but has also implemented refrigerant upgrade to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and launched an Energy Awareness Program to track the energy consumption of METRO China's stores and headquarters. It initiated a pilot solar power project in Shanghai Putuo store in 2015. The 350-KWH photovoltaic panels installed are expected to generate 400,000 KWH per year, accounting for 25% of total electricity consumption in store.

The company is also working on saving water, paper and other energy items to protect the environment. In addition, it keeps optimizing transportation routes to successfully manage its logistics at the fastest speed with the least resources and emission while minimizes food waste.

Caring for people and giving back to the community

METRO China believes that bringing the company’s needs and ambitions in line with the needs of nature, people and future generations will provide it with long-term prospects for prosperity. Therefore the company values the engagement of its employees and contribution to the community.

METRO China has dedicated House of Learning to train, inspire and support employees to improve capabilities through active learning, and to supply more talents for the sustainable growth of its business. Till now the company has set up Houses of Learning in 11 cities as well as learning centers in every store in China. METRO also cares for its employees, management trainees and female employees, by holding various activities such as Family Day, Young Talent Plan, METRO Women’s Forum, etc. As a result, METRO’s employee Engagement International Survey reached 86%, 8% higher than the average of top 100 employers in China.

“Care & Share” is the core belief of METRO’s community involvement. The company has been holding “Boxes of Love” event since 2011, donating foods and snacks packed into boxes and delivering to the kids in orphanages across the country during Chinese New Year. It was also the first company in China to introduce “Food Bank” project into China in 2013. Till now, Food Bank donation of foods has been over RMB 1.5 million in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Whenever natural disasters strike, METRO is always at the frontline of relief efforts, such as donations to Ludian earthquake, Yaan earthquake and Yunnan drought.
