METRO provides further quake aid by donating tents

May 30, 2008, Shanghai – In addition to the donation of Euro 100,000 (about 1.08 million RMB) to the Chinese government after the devastating earthquake, METRO renewed its efforts by donating badly-needed tents to support China’s disaster-relief campaign. 5 large tents with the value of over RMB 500,000 have been donated by METRO China and urgently installed at 4 local hospitals in Mianzhu and Shifang cities. Moreover, METRO Cash & Carry donated another 900 tents with the worth of Euro 50,000 which has departed from Frankfurt airport and transported to China. As of 28 May, a total of RMB 2.2 million in cashes and disaster-relief stuff has been donated by the company.

A massive relief effort, which involves providing large number of tents for millions homeless earthquake survivors and mobile hospitals as well as schools, has been called on by Chinese State Council, Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as Ministry of Civil Affairs lately. In response to it, METRO China has decided to urgently buy large-size tents, which could be used as temporary hospitals for medial cure, to support the quake relief. The five 300-square-meter large tents, with 1,500 square meters space in total, are over RMB 500,000 in value.

On 28 May, after the long-distance transportation, the 5 tent have finally reached Shifang and Mianzhu, the most devastating cities in the epicenter and will be set up at 4 local hospitals immediately. 2 tents will be installed at Shifang People’s Hospital, and one in ShiGu Town Hospital. The other 2 tents will be dispatched to Mianzhu Maternal and Child Health Hospital and FuXin Town Hospital respectively.

The hospitals, local health authorities, as well as Red Cross Organizations all expressed the thankfulness to METRO for the timely help.

Internationally, on May 19, the Chinese Consulate in Frankfurt approached METRO Cash & Carry with an appeal for tents which are indispensable in the post-quake region. METRO Cash & Carry acted immediately to check its own stock and collected approximately 900 tents altogether. May 20, the company organized delivery service to hand over all tents to the Chinese Consulate in Frankfurt, who was ready to ship goods back to the affected region by cargo plane.

Mr. Li Haiyan, Chinese Consul-General, later expressed deep appreciation to METRO Cash & Carry for its solid social responsibility seen in the quick response to the appeal, high-efficiency of operations and generous donation.
