Shanghai, May 14th, 2008 – After the earthquake hit
Wenchuan County on May 12, Dr. Eckhard Cordes, CEO METRO Group and Mr.
Frans W.H. Muller, CEO of METRO Cash & Carry International sent a
letter on May 13 to Mr. Wen Jiabao, Premier of State Council of Chinese
Central Government to offer Metro’s support for the Chinese government
and people. On top of providing disaster-relief materials, Metro donated
EUR 100,000(about
1.08 million RMB) to
Chinese Government’s Relief Fund.
In the letter to Premier Wen, Dr. Cordes and Mr.
Muller say, they feel “deep regrets about the devastating earthquake in
the Sichuan Province and the tragic losses of so many lives and homes.
Please accept our sympathies with the victims and their families who were
so terribly hit by this catastrophe.”
Metro is committed to offering strong support to
Chinese government and people in the disaster-relief campaign. On behalf
of METRO Group and METRO Cash & Carry International, Dr. Cordes and
Mr. Muller donate EUR 100,000 to Chinese Government’s Relief Fund. At the
end of the letter, they both sincerely wish China the best possible
recovery from this catastrophe.
After the earthquake took place, Metro has mobilized all possible
resources to support fully the disaster-relief campaign. On May 12, the
very day of the earthquake, Mr. Tino Zeiske President of Metro China and
his management board urged Metro Chengdu and Chongqing Stores together
with HQ buying, logistics and other departments to safeguard the safety
and interests of customers and employees, and also to spare no efforts in
guaranteeing the market supply in support of governmental relief actions.
On May 13, regardless of constant after-quakes,
overcoming a series of difficulties Metro Chendu Store kept normal
business operation from 8:30 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. In addition, Metro Chengdu
Store has so far provided 240,000 RMB of disaster-relief materials such
as drinking water, canned food, milk powder and biscuits, which are badly
needed in disaster-relief. On the nights of May 12 and 13, Chengdu Store
provided temporary overnight accommodation for more than 5000 local
people in the store parking area.
On the morning of May 14, Metro China together with
the Party Committee and Labor Union jointly launched an urgent donation
within Metro China. 8300 employees, Chinese and expatriates in 37 stores
have been mobilized to make contributions to the national campaign of
