METRO supports Chinese disaster-relief and donates Euro 100,000

Shanghai, May 14th, 2008 – After the earthquake hit Wenchuan County on May 12, Dr. Eckhard Cordes, CEO METRO Group and Mr. Frans W.H. Muller, CEO of METRO Cash & Carry International sent a letter on May 13 to Mr. Wen Jiabao, Premier of State Council of Chinese Central Government to offer Metro’s support for the Chinese government and people. On top of providing disaster-relief materials, Metro donated EUR 100,000about 1.08 million RMB to Chinese Government’s Relief Fund.

In the letter to Premier Wen, Dr. Cordes and Mr. Muller say, they feel “deep regrets about the devastating earthquake in the Sichuan Province and the tragic losses of so many lives and homes. Please accept our sympathies with the victims and their families who were so terribly hit by this catastrophe.”

Metro is committed to offering strong support to Chinese government and people in the disaster-relief campaign. On behalf of METRO Group and METRO Cash & Carry International, Dr. Cordes and Mr. Muller donate EUR 100,000 to Chinese Government’s Relief Fund. At the end of the letter, they both sincerely wish China the best possible recovery from this catastrophe.

After the earthquake took place,   Metro has mobilized all possible resources to support fully the disaster-relief campaign. On May 12, the very day of the earthquake, Mr. Tino Zeiske President of Metro China and his management board urged Metro Chengdu and Chongqing Stores together with HQ buying, logistics and other departments to safeguard the safety and interests of customers and employees, and also to spare no efforts in guaranteeing the market supply in support of governmental relief actions.

On May 13, regardless of constant after-quakes, overcoming a series of difficulties Metro Chendu Store kept normal business operation from 8:30 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. In addition, Metro Chengdu Store has so far provided 240,000 RMB of disaster-relief materials such as drinking water, canned food, milk powder and biscuits, which are badly needed in disaster-relief. On the nights of May 12 and 13, Chengdu Store provided temporary overnight accommodation for more than 5000 local people in the store parking area.

On the morning of May 14, Metro China together with the Party Committee and Labor Union jointly launched an urgent donation within Metro China. 8300 employees, Chinese and expatriates in 37 stores have been mobilized to make contributions to the national campaign of disaster-relief.
